30 is the New 40 - Link Roundup
New Quarterly Feature To You Get More Relevant Content And To Highlight Writers You May Enjoy
Hi All,
How is your summer going?
Are you getting some time on the patio, some good conversations with friends and family?
Time to work on a secret hobby you’ve been cultivating1?
I hope so.
I have been reading SO many new articles, books, and sources that suggest that a 30 hour workweek is probably going to be a reality in the future. Will it be in 2 years? Or maybe 20? I’m not totally sure.
But just in case you need some “fuel” to support your proposal to your boss, I wanted to share a few of the sources I’ve found to be helpful.
This article from Fast Company was sent by my friend Patricia (via LinkedIn)2 who is all about workforce development.
The screen-grab below doesn’t have the link, but I wanted to properly credit the author with this snip.
The link below is from Chris Guillebeau, who I have been following since ~2016 or so. He’s also got a great new book out on Time Anxiety which made a great audio companion on a recent trip to take care of my parents. I like how this article honors those of us who may have some type of physical or mental limitation (usually temporary, but sometimes long-term). It helps us focus on what we CAN do rather than what we feel like we SHOULD do…
This next article is on why women need to keep working, even if they are raising children. While I respect every parent’s decisions whether to work full time (or not) while raising children, I also see that my Mom’s social security is one quarter of what my Dad’s is. She was DEFINTELY working (for zero pay) when she was raising us. But it has its drawbacks, and I think this Substack piece covers these issues well.
And finally, one more link (because I know you’re either on vacation or dreaming about going…). Jennie O’Connor’s writing is fun, and she really has a lot of different tools for helping us automate things. I haven’t checked most of them out yet, but I trust when I’ve had enough, I will.
If I could get AI to do my laundry (and fold too) you know I would! 🧺
Want to share any time-saving or sanity-saving strategies that have worked for you? These could be work-related or home-related.
Or if you have managed to get your boss either not to care that you’re working 30 hours a week, or to fully sign off on it, let us know too3. Sometimes it isn’t about getting legislation for these ideas, as much as giving ourselves permission to ask for what we want.
I’m embracing lots of witchy new habits. In my previous life I was probably burned at the stake for them. This time around, with crazy people posing as presidents, I’m deciding to be more open.
Are we connected on LinkedIn yet? Do you want to be? If I don’t recognize you, be sure to mention this newsletter in your connect request. Thanks!
And if it’s more important to be off-the-radar for you, I get it! I really do. But sometimes you need to take the risk that you inspire someone to be as brave as you are!
